About

Want to Know More About the Rotary Club of Kimberley South?

There are two Rotary Clubs in Kimberley, our club called Rotary Club of Kimberley South, and the other club which is called Rotary Club of Kimberley. We hold weekly meetings over lunch each Friday from 12.30 to 2.00 pm.

Membership is completely voluntary and new members are introduced or sponsored to membership through an existing member. All members are expected to attend most meetings (or undertake what are called make-ups by attending or participating in recognised alternatives e.g. attend another club meeting, undertake an e-learning programme, participate in project activities, and the like).

Rotary is a non-profit public service organisation whose members get involved in club, vocational, community, international and youth service so as to promote integrity and advance world understanding, goodwill and peace. Members are involved in raising funds, either through fund-raising events or by seeking donations. The club uses these funds for projects, events and activities where the Club has taken a decision to get personally and directly involved.
The mission, object and avenues of service and four-way test determine the way that we act as individual Rotarians and as members of the Rotary Club of Kimberley South. They determine what endeavours we get involved in and how we invest club time, knowledge, gifts or monies to meet our wider mission and objectives.

We are a club of all races and both genders - disability is not an impediment to membership. Prior to a decision handed down by the United States Supreme Court in 1987, Rotary was a men-only organization (you can read a brief history of women in rotary here); the pre-democratic dispensation in South Africa also excluded non-whites from membership. All clubs in South Africa are working actively to change the gender and racial mix of their membership. We encourage all people - female, male, all races, with or without disabilities, to seek membership. We all have so much to offer in service above self.

If after reading these pages you are interested in becoming more involved in Rotary, we recommend that you contact one of the Club members listed on the Clubhouse page. They will be able to guide and advise you on how best you might get involved.

The Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a non-partisan and non-sectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships.

The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings.

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
  • The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
  • High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
  • The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Mission

The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

Avenues of Service

These principles have been developed over the years to provide Rotarians with a strong, common purpose and direction. They serve as a foundation for our relationships with each other and the action we take in the world. We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity.
  1. Club Service focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan.
  2. Vocational Service calls on every Rotarian to work with integrity and contribute their expertise to the problems and needs of society.
  3. Community Service encourages every Rotarian to find ways to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to serve the public interest.
  4. International Service exemplifies our global reach in promoting peace and understanding. We support this service avenue by sponsoring or volunteering on international projects, seeking partners abroad, and more.
  5. Youth Service recognises the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs such as Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange.
