FASD Project

FASD Project

Global Grant
In June 2015 the Rotary Club of Kimberley South and the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek (Frederick, MD, USA) were awarded a Rotary International Global Grant (No. 1527901) to develop a universally applicable sports-based education and prevention curriculum that teaches young people about the morbid affect of alcohol consumption on their unborn child.

The project is being undertaken in the Kimberley municipality of Sol Plaatje (Galeshewe and Roodepan), as well as in Richmond and Colesberg (Northern Cape province in South Africa).

Our implementing agents:
  • Grassroot Soccer: experienced in designing and delivering youth-focused initiatives that use the power of sport to influence behaviours
  • Hope in South Africa: a global partnership empowering communities to become healthy contributing members of society

Sustainability
There are a number of avenues where this project will integrate with government initiatives in the future. For example:
  • 2012: The Ministries of Health and Education introduced the Integrated School Health Programme that aims to offer comprehensive and integrated health services to learners
  •  2013: The Ministry of Education developed the National Strategy for the Prevention and Management of Alcohol and Drug Use among Learners in Schools
  • 2014: The Ministry of Health launched MomConnect which uses cell phone technology to link mothers to crucial health information and reminders during their pregnancy
  • 2015: The Ministry of Health published The National Health Promotion Policy and Strategy

What it feels like to have FAS
My name is John Kellerman. I am 24 and I have fetal alcohol syndrome. I have learned how to “act” like an adult, but tests show that emotionally I am just a 6-year-old child inside.  I have lots of knowledge, but I don’t have enough common sense to use that information well.  Read more
