Run for Cover (sleeping bag) Project |
|

Are you interested in sponsoring an urban survival sleeping bag for a homeless person? The Rotary Club of Kimberley South is partnering with a charity in Cape Town to manufacture waterproof and highly insulated sleeping bags from recycled plastics, specifically for the homeless. You can make your donation straight into our Rotary Club’s projects bank account, using the reference “Run for Cover”, and we will do the rest – with the Rotary guarantee that every rand raised will go to the specified project. We've called the project "Run for Cover" because we will host a fun run with a donation of non-perishable food as an entry fee. The bags cost R150 rand each.
A Problem with a Solution
Homeless people face difficulties in being a contributing member of society. The social barriers in South Africa alienate those that find themselves living on the street, removing opportunities and replacing them with the need for day to day survival. Everybody has the potential to thrive, they just need the right context.
The solution is to create a bridge over these social barriers. Make the connection between the people that want to help the homeless and the homeless people that want to help themselves. This link then becomes an enabler for both parties, creating the opportunity for social upliftment where it has the best chance of success.
Where does the recycled plastic come from?
We have all seen the large billboards hanging outdoors along city streets and highways in the nastiest of weather – high winds, scorching sun, intense heat, strong rains, – proudly carrying an advertising message from the likes of Coca Cola, Jeep, or any of the big political parties.
The billboards are made of a highly engineered vinyl to withstand the harsh environments in which they hang. These advertising vinyls are made of UV-protected and waterproof vinyl layers that sandwich between them a layer of rip-stop nylon scrim to keep them from tearing.

What is Street Sleeper
Street Sleeper wants to be the bridge. They are driven by innovation, passion, technology, collaboration and left-field thinking. They are starting out on their journey by creating these survival bags to reduce waste, lower social barriers, raise awareness, provide shelter, create employment and to hopefully add to the sense of value in the lives of people in our communities.
The process of creating a survival bag starts with your donation which helps Street Sleeper to divert a disused billboard from landfill, it is then transformed through several stages, creating employment and providing value and opportunity to the homeless person that will use it. All the while, raising awareness on the issue and helping to bridge social divides.
How the bags are made
Street Sleeper had a killer design brief: to create a sturdy and sustainably-sourced urban survival sleeping bag that would last a long time, stand up to the elements, and double as a daytime pack to carry belongings.
